About Carlsbad

The best known and largest spa city in the Czech Republic was founded in 1350. Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV promoted it the town in 1370 and it got its final architectural looks at the end of 19th century. Among the most significant sights are – St. Andrew church at the cemetery, St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Metropolitan theatre, Mill Colonnade and the St. Mary Magdalene Church. The spa town is surrounded by romantic, hilly landscape of the foothills of the Krušné Mountains. Kilometers of forest paths wind on the wooded hillsides. They provide an opportunity of beautiful walks and panoramic views of the spa valley. To the glamour of the spa and social life also belongs the traditional manufacture of crystal and porcelain or organizing various concerts and festivals. However, Karlovy Vary is not only a famous spa, it is also a town which, for more than two centuries, has been inherently linked with production of worldwide famous herbal liqueur or popular mineral water.

The Carlsbad balneology was significantly modernized by a notable physician David Becher. He carried out the first scientific examination of the waters and set up a production and exportation of it in 1764. He supported alleviation in drinking the thermal waters and preferred baths. In 1755, Johan Georg Pupp started the tradition of the largest hotel and restaurant operation in our spas. In 1826, Jean de Carro established steam baths, located not far from the Thermal Spring. The first iron baths were applied by Dr.Mannlem in 1853. The influence of the Prague balneological school started influencing the spa treatment and chronic metabolic and digestive tract disorders began to be treated here.
